Round Liner (RL): Round liner needles are for lining and outlining designs. These are tightly grouped needles that are organized in a circular formation.

Round Shader (RS): Round shader needles are for shading. These are needle points organized in a circular formation, but not as tightly grouped as a round liner.

Both can used for outlining during the tattoo procedure. However, Round Shaders can be used for shading as well.

Magnum shaders are the preferred grouping or needle type for pretty much all shading work. Magnums hold and deliver a lot of ink, making them perfect for large areas of color packing and shading. Less passes are required over an area to work the ink in, which means less trauma to the skin. There are a few different variations of magnum needles.

Curved magnum shaders are also known as soft magnums, soft edge magnums, and round magnums. They’re used in the same way as magnum shaders except the pins are arranged so they arch at the center. This means that the edges of the needle run along the skin with more conformity, allowing for better dispersal of ink and a more consistent line. It’s also less damaging to the skin and helps with soft shading.

The term bugpin defines the size of the individual pins rather than the entire needle. Bugpin needles are made in the same layout as a magnum or round needle, but with much thinner pins in the cluster. They're small and tightly connected so they can hold a lot of ink. The ink is released slowly, which gives you more control for creating intricate details. Bugpin needles are perfect for creating smooth gradients, portraits, and photorealistic tattoos.

Bugpin needles are normally between 0.20 millimeters - 0. millimeters, versus a standard needle sizing of 0.30 millimeters - 0.35 millimeters. When using a bugpin needle, you will need to size down one or two sizes for the tube. So, if you're using a seven grouping, you may need a size five or six tube.
